The ISA stands out as a barbaric law that goes against all our notions of what law and justice should mean. The ISA is an evil, anti-democratic law that can have no place in a country that upholds the Rule of Law.
The ISA subverts natural justice. Natural justice demands that any person accused of a crime should have the right to due process and to be presumed innocent unless and until he or she is convicted in an independent, open court of law.
Without due process and legal checks and balances, ISA detainees are left at the mercy of their captors. In the past, detainees have complained of cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment while under detention.
We therefore call for the immediate repeal of the ISA.

Former Gerakan deputy secretary-general Lee Kah Choon has submitted a letter to withdraw his party membership and hopes that this will put an end to the controversy surrounding him.
In an one-page statement today, Lee reiterated that his objective is clear and consistent throughout his political career, which is to serve the people.
The former member of Parliament for Jelutong had resigned from all party posts after Gerakan’s annihilation in Penang at the hands of the opposition in the March 8 general election.
However, controversy arose when he accepted the director post in the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and InvestPenang on Monday in an announcement made by the state Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.
'My record speaks for itself'
In refusing to answer the letter, Lee explained that his decision to work for the Penang state government was motivated by the island’s interest which cannot be compromised by any political consideration.
"In the next quarter, the projected economic slowdown is going to affect out export oriented economic performance.
"I believe the focus on job creation and measures to ensure sustainable growth is more important than continuous politicking," he said.
"Since my decision is not acceptable to the Gerakan leadership, I believe it is best for me to retreat totally from party politics.
"This way, I hope we can put the matter to rest and move forward with some serious tasks at hand," he added.
Former Gerakan deputy secretary-general Lee Kah Choon’s move to accept directorship of the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and InvestPenang.
Lee surprised both DAP and Gerakan members when he accepted Penang Pakatan Rakyat chief minister Lim Guan Eng’s offer yesterday to helm the PDC. The PDC and InvestPenang are investment development agencies of the state government.
"Just five days after the general election, Lee requested that I have dinner with
him and when I met him, he was telling me of his grand plans to revive the party’s image as well as plans to make the party a watchdog on the new DAP-led state government.
"Now (after his recent move) Lee will face great suspicion from DAP members as he still is a Gerakan member and BN as well as Gerakan will also doubt his loyalty," Keng Yaik (
right) told reporters at a hastily-convened press conference held at the party’s headquarters in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur.
Keng Yaik, however, said the hiring of a Gerakan strongman was part of DAP’s political game and it would only be to Guan Eng’s loss as the act would be seen as a ‘politically selfish move’ instead of a sincere effort to help the people of Penang.
